Daniel mine, Gallenbach valley, Wittichen
General
The Gallenbach valley is a small valley in the southern part of the inner Wittichen district, almost parallel to the Talbach/Klosterbach (creek at Wittichen).
To get to the Gallenbach Valley, go to Schenkenzell at Federal Road 254 (Freiburg-Wolfach-Freudenstadt). From the central part of the town (there is a souvernier shop with clocks), take the road to the north. The road sign says Reinerzau, Vortal. After taking the curvy road in the Kleine (little) Kinzig valley, there is a small road to the left with a small blue sign "Gallenbach". Tak the road about 300 m, until a dirt road branches off to the northeast. A short hike on that road (about 100 m) and then go in the forest to the left and climb up the slope. There are small remains of the old stockpile and a barite vein outcropping in a small opencut.
The Daniel mine is the only mine in the Wittichen district whose main goal were copper bismuth sulphides. This locality is type locality of Wittichenite (together with Neuglück mine about 1 km to the north). Wittichenite, Emplectite and Chalkopyrite are the main ore minerals in the Daniel vein.
